The Montessori theory is that a child can change their behavior or actions because of an experience. This can come from behaving inappropriately in school either with materials or with other students.

The first core issue to be discussed is continuity versus discontinuity. Continuity is the gradual process of how a child changes. It is sometimes so gradual, that it can easily be not noticed. Montessori developed materials that allow the children to learn in steps that were easy for them to be able to master. She also developed special equipment to teach fundamental skills such as shoe tying and learning to button buttons (Crain, 2011). Learning in steps can also be accomplished by observing others. The Montessori methods allows the younger children in the group to learn by observing the older ones in the group (Lillard, 2006)
Discontinuity is when developmental changes seem to appear overnight. In the Montessori methods, around the age of six or seven, a child's developing needs make a major shift. It is during this time that Montessori believed the child becomes more intellectual, focusing more outward toward the world (Crain, 2011).
