Neurotransmitters are the brain chemicals that communicate information throughout our body and our brain. The neurotransmitters relay signals between nerve cells, which are called neurons. There are various types of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, Gaba, and dopamine, which are all considered to be inhibitory neurotransmitters. Inhibitory neurotransmitters do not stimulate the brain; however in order for stability of mood and balance there has to be an adequate amount of serotonin released. Serotonin also regulates other processes in the body like sleep cycle, pain control, digestion, and cravings (Carlson, & Carlson, 2011).
