Ethos, pathos, and logos are modes of persuasion that are used to convince your audience. Because Aristotle invented the term they are called the Aristotle Classification Scheme (1).

The first, ethos, means to convince the audience of the credibility and character of the author or the one speaking, which can usually be done by choosing terminology appropriate for your target audience that makes the speaker sound fair and unbiased. Pathos is the appeal of emotions, which is meant to persuade an audience by appealing to their emotions. The speaker or author attempts to make their audience feel what they want them to feel.
