One private sector industry that is severely affected by cybercrime is the financial services industry. Financial services crime increased by 50% from 12% in 2009 to 18% in 2011. Cybercrime is the second most important type of economic crime in financial services (a). It was 38% in 2011 and 39% in 2014. This compares with 16% in 2011 in other industries vs 17% in 2014 in other industries (b). In 2013 banks all across the world have perceived cybercrime as among their top five risks. According to 2014 Global Economic Crime Survey 39% of financial sector respondents say they had been victims of cybercrime(c). The Penmon Institute's 2015 study says financial services organizations top the list as the biggest victim of cybercrime with an average cost of $13.5 million on cybercrime in 2015.According to a study by IBM and Ponemon Institute the average cost of a data breach increased from $3.59 million in 2014 to $3.79 million in 2014(d).
