As you talk about Charlemagne and the Carolingian Renaissance, please allow my notes to guide you:
As you overview what was the Carolingian Renovation, I see him as the Roman ideal despite his context because of his forceful tactics and border expansions. When he targeted Byzantine areas in Italy and elsewhere, I also see him as embodying this ideal. Besides that, he was an ideal because of his strong goal for Christianization. Because he was successful at enlisting help from the church to support his conquests, he made the Saxons to accept this new faith (http://www.sparknotes.com/history/european/middle1/section8.rhtml).
