1. What was the impact of Mongol occupation on Persia (Iran)? In 3-5 sentences, describe some of the long-term effects of the Mongol Empire on Iran.
- The resulting Ilkhanate after the fall of the Abbasid Caliphate in Baghdad (Persian Khanate of the Mongol Empire built by the heirs of Genghis Khan in 1258 CE) ensured that Persia would be able to take part in the trade and exchange on the Silk Road (Wills, 2014), creating an expansive economic and cultural exchange network for Persia beyond its borders. Certain cultural practices of Persians were also promoted or preserved - Persian dressing, religion (a mix of Islam and Christianity). In the arts, figure iconography on clay, porcelain and metal was practiced while metalworking inlaid gold or copper and brass. Economic production was extended beyond cities and agricultural sites as herding and stock-raising was adapted in rural or far-flung sites. A few Mongols converted to Islam, which helped in ensuring the preservation of the Islamic faith and its traditions in the Ilkhanate (Wills, 2014).
