Describe Late Medieval Europe and its Cultural Diversity

The culture of the early middle ages included remnants of ancient civilizations with the emergence of religions from the Middle East. With the fall of the Roman Empire in 476, the increased mobility of different populations resulted in great cultural diversity and cultural exchange. Europe gained a plural identity in both the religious sphere and cultural sphere.

The late middle ages saw a chain reaction of events that contributed to new trends that shaped European culture through to the present day. The changes in territorial distribution lead to changes in population distribution which, in turn, lead to radically altered social relations (and political organization). The newly created social classes competed with each other so much so that no one class gained absolute power. With the increase in social classes, women were no longer defined in relation to men. Women were able to become active and influential in society. Religious women were not able to become priests but they were influential as visionaries, spiritual advisors, and writers.

Identity was linked to kinship, class, and faith.

Economic expansion continued into the Mediterranean, Iberia, and eastern Europe which consisted of populations of Muslims, Jews, and Christians.

Europe's population almost tripled by 1350 due to better agricultural methods and increased food production. This also led to the increase in women's lifespans and helped them to survive childbearing.
