Evaluation of teaching and a clinical instructor should be comprehensive and cover the major general characteristics of good teaching including instructor knowledge, organization and clarity of presentation, enthusiasm, instruction skills, clinical competence, clinical supervision, and professional characteristics (Irby, 1993).
The most commonly used methods of evaluation to consider are:
(1) Self-evaluation,
(2) Peer evaluation,
(3) Student or house officer evaluations, and
(4) Administrative evaluation (usually for promotion, etc.) (as cited in http://www.comsep.org/Curriculum/StrategiesAssessment/SectionI.htm).
The most comprehensive evaluation systems combine data from each of these methods to create a complete assessment. (see the attached resources which expands on each of these strategies and others, including the strengths and weaknesses of each strategy).
One consideration in assessment and evaluation is that the qualities of a good pre-clinical and clinical teaching may differ. At least one tool to evaluate the effectiveness of faculty teaching in an evidence-based medicine rotation has taken these differences into account by modifying the categories to those originally suggested by Irby to reflect issues relevant to clinical teaching (Irby, 1993).
