In regards to community health nursing, needs assessment can be defined as a method of ascertaining the apparent gaps between the health care needs of a given community, and the desired level of nursing or health care facilitation and access for a given community. A needs assessment is a very important preliminary step in ascertaining what actions should be taken in order to effectively close the gap between the health care or nursing services that are needed, and those that are provided. A determination of the needs within a given community is will give an individual the framework for the development of a concrete plan of action, that will have the greatest statistical chance of meeting the needs of the community.
