In general, the impact of professional development on knowledge development and dissemination is a positive one. That is, the greater the degree of professional development, the greater is the knowledge of nursing and dissemination of that knowledge. Nurses' who engage in continuous professional development, such as learning about Orem's model of nursing, can apply her model successfully in practice setting. The Orem model is based upon the philosophy that all "patients wish to care for themselves". It is particularly used in rehabilitation and primary care settings where the patient is encouraged to be as independent as possible.
