Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is increasing in our society, with persons experiencing a range of symptoms from flashbacks, nightmares and intrusive memories to avoidance and numbing regarding events and people to hyperarousal and hypervigliance (National Council on Disability, 2015). It is estimated that a "significant number of service members and veterans are at risk for PTSD syndrome"(National Council on Disability, 2015). In addition, people who have suffered traumatic events (e.g. war, extreme weather, accident, or assault) are at risk. Typically, PTSD occurs in conjunction with "other psychiatric, behavioral and medical conditions" (National Council on Disability, 2015), with most individuals who have been diagnosed with PTSD also experiencing anxiety or depression. Individuals with PTSD also tend to have poor physical health and shorter average lifespans (National Council on Disability, 2015).
