Emerging Standards of Care

The setting would be any general tertiary hospital. Your help is greatly appreciated. I need help getting started.

Emerging Standards of Care
Review emerging standards of culturally competent care. Here are possible resources to use:
a. DHHS Office of Minority Health http://www.omhrc.gov/clas/;
b. National Center for Cultural Competence http://data.georgetown.edu/research/gucchd/nccc/;
c. AHRQ http://www.ahrq.gov/about/cods/cultcomp.htm;
d. Annie E Casey Foundation http://www.aecf.org/initiatives/hswi/.

Prepare a response that explores the following topics in your own workplace or a setting that you select for this discussion:
a. Define culturally competent care appropriate for your own workplace, based on your perusal of the assigned readings.
b. Identify the populations served and any issues of population vulnerability.
c. Comment on standards of cultural competence that appear to be met and any that are not met
d. Identify potential impacts of delivery of nursing care where standards are being met, and where standards are not being met.
e. Comment on solutions that could be implemented where standards are not being met.

Hi again,

Another interesting posting! Let's take a closer look at the four questions. I also cited three supporting articles at the end.

RESPONSE:

a. Define culturally competent care appropriate for your own workplace, based on your perusal of the assigned readings.

What is Culture? It is the sum total of the way of living; includes values, beliefs, standards, language, thinking patterns, behavioral norms, communications styles, etc. Guides decisions and actions of a group through time. (http://72.14.205.104/search?q=cache:-kSYGvDo0IYJ:hr.healthcare.ucla.edu/Download/Cultural%2520Diversity%2520and%2520Health%2520Care.ppt+cultural+diversity+in+healthcare+definition&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=ca&client=firefox-a)

The field of cultural competence is emerging as part of a strategy to reduce disparities in access to and quality of health care. To date, efforts to define and implement the principles of cultural competence are still ongoing. Keeping this in mind, one definition of cultural competence put forth by Betancourt (2002) based on his research findings:

"Cultural competence in health care describes the ability of systems to provide care to patients with diverse values, beliefs and behaviors, including tailoring delivery to meet patients' social, cultural, and linguistic needs. Experts interviewed for this study describe cultural competence both as a vehicle to increase access to quality care for all patient populations and as a business strategy to attract new patients and market share." (http://www.commonwealthfund.org/usr_doc/betancourt_culturalcompetence_576.pdf?section=4039).

Another definition of Cultural Competence is:

"A set of congruent behaviors, practices, attitudes and policies that come together in a system or agency or among professionals, enabling effective work to be done in cross-cultural situations" (http://72.14.205.104/search?q=cache:-kSYGvDo0IYJ:hr.healthcare.ucla.edu/Download/Cultural%2520Diversity%2520and%2520Health%2520Care.ppt+cultural+diversity+in+healthcare+definition&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=ca&client=firefox-a).

Seee other definitions proposed on p. 10 of the cited resource: Cultural Diversity and Health Care.doc

Often organizations assess their level of cultural competence (see Cultural Competence Health Practitioner Assessment at URL: https://www4.georgetown.edu/uis/keybridge/keyform/form.cfm?formID=277). It would be interesting to have the employees from Jackson-Madison County General Hospital complete this Cultural Competence Health Practitioner Assessment to get direct information.

Have you other definitions to add?

b. Identify the populations served and any issues of population vulnerability.

Jackson-Madison County General Hospital is part of the West Tennessee Healthcare. It is a 612-bed tertiary care ...

Solution Summary

Through illustrative example of a general tertiary hospital, this solution examines the emerging standards of culturally competent care across several dimensions e.g. population served, population vulnerability, assessment of culturally competence and the impact on nursing. Solutions are then discussed. Supplemented with two articles on aspects of cultural competence as well as an example of a tertiary hospital. 1618 words with many references.
