The Health Belief Model (HBM) was originally developed by social psychologists to understand why people failed to make use of the screening tests for early detection of disease. The model eventually expanded and applied to other health related problems including chronic illness such as patient's response to symptoms or compliance with medical regimens (Stroebe and Stroebe, 1997). Rosenstock (1990) claimed that the model has been one of the most influential and widely used approaches in explaining health-related behaviors for the past decades.
