The American Heart Association divides CVD into four categories: hypertension; stroke, coronary artery disease, and heart failure. Some categories such as hypertension and coronary artery disease are also risk factors for stroke or heart failure. The predicted increase is influenced by many factors, but the aging population is believed to be the single most important factor. However, underlying influences such as sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and high fat diet are all underlying risk factors that can be changed. Though there are few proven methods of preventing or slowing the aging process, there are many measures that can reduce the risks of CVD, if adopted early and used as a screening process for those at risk, whether the risk is minimal or high.

Addressing the underlying causes of CVD, such as hypertension, diabetes, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, and elevated blood LDL levels is believed to help reduce the incidence of more severe CVD, such as heart failure and stroke. The National Committee for Quality Assurance (2013) suggests that screening all patients routinely for risk factors is a means of prevention, if each of the risk factors is addressed, whether an individual has one risk factor or many. The committee believes this requires physicians who care for and ...
