According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, "Drinking during pregnancy can lead to a range of physical, learning, and behavioral effects in the developing brain." The most serious condition is fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). The governmental resource continues on to note that, "Children with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) may have distinct facial features." Alcohol abuse can provoke liver problems. Cirrhosis can harm the brain and can lead to hepatic encephalopathy, a serious and potentially fatal brain condition, according to the NIAAA. Alcohol can affect the memory after only a few drinks, the US Department of Health and Human Services claims. Since alcohol affects each person differently, managing and reducing the affects is difficult for professionals.

According to the Research Society on Alcoholism (2011), "Untreated addiction costs America $400 billion annually and recent research indicates that alcoholism and alcohol abuse alone cost the nation's economy approximately $185 billion each year." The portion of that figure related to medical expenses is 15 percent. Finally, most all reputable sources on the topic of the effects of alcoholism and the body indicate a direct correlation to heart disease, stroke and other chronic conditions.
