The story focuses on Dexter Green who is a middle-class boy with dreams of becoming part of the elite class in society. His humble beginnings started in a place called Keeble Minnesota (and lives in Black Bear Village) where his father was a merchant and he worked as a golf caddy in Black Bear Lake. During his time employed at the golf club, he met a girl named Judy Jones and caddied for her father (Mortimer) at the club. When he is chosen to be Judy's caddy, he quit his job because he had a crush on her and did not want her to look at him as the hired help.

After college, Dexter gets involved in the business sector and returns to the Sherry Island Golf Club to play with men who he once caddied for. He meets Judy Jones again, has an encounter with her on the lake, and gets an invitation to join her for dinner. After this, they begin an affair. But Dexter quickly finds out that he is just one of many men that Judy has on a leash.

Dexter realizes this, and a few months later begins to date Irene Scheerer who is a girl from his own social class. Judy returns home from a vacation, realizes that Dexter is engaged, and convinces him to marry her instead. Dexter quickly breaks up with Irene to be with Judy. About a month later, Judy breaks up with him amused by her actions. Dexter is heartbroken and joins the Army to fight in WWI.
