1. As you brainstorm the person first, disability second strategy, please note that it is the best way to employ tolerance and equity into teaching situations. This method avoids stereotyping and sensationalizing. It is not a good make successful students with disabilities feel like norm breakers or "superhumans." Please note that people with disabilities possess the same range of talents as non-disabled students, so it is best not to do that. It is also important to avoid sensationalizing by using language associated with victims or tragedies such as "afflicted with," "crippled by," and other forms of inappropriate language. This person first, disability second rule deals a lot with language and how to ensure that your language as a teacher is fair and unbiased.

Focus is another vital issue. It is best not to focus on a person's disability, rather than the human aspect. We need to know the student's interests, strengths, weaknesses, and personality on a human level, not merely in terms of diagnosis. He or she is a person first! Similarly, in terms of language, it is vital to watch euphemisms such as "physically challenged."
