Parallel teaching, also called co-teaching, involves the use of a second adult in the classroom. Ideally, this second adult would also be a certified teacher, but in some school systems, this person is a paraprofessional. A paraprofessional is an adult who is not a certified teacher, but who does have some training (usually provided by the local school system).

A second adult in the classroom is a huge help in the planning and delivering of lessons and curriculum content in the classroom. The co-teachers can divide up the students who require additional, special modifications to their lessons, which divides the workload of differentiation in half.
