When assessing how demographics can deeply affect a child's cognitive, behavioral and social development, I am a personal example since I was raised amid poverty in rural Appalachia. While other, more affluent kids had sidewalks, playgrounds, excellent doctors, and access to good food to promote development, I wasn't afforded those equal opportunities. Cognitively, I did not have any books in my household, only old magazines from my father's coal mining union, so when I started school, I lack the cognitive development and skills that many of my wealthier peers had. Since my family were very dysfunctional in a home with abuse and PTSD, I wasn't behaviorally or socially as adjusted as my peers when I entered school, since I was scared, distrusting, anxious, and unsure of myself as far as my poor self-esteem.
