In response to expanding policies, research, and practice, the field of special education has evolved to meet the demands of individuals with disabilities in our current education system.
Before 1975, individuals with disabilities were consistently denied access to an education solely on the basis of their disabilities. EAHCA or Education for All Handicapped Children Act, along with other key supreme court cases, mandated all school districts to educate students with disabilities.
The law was intended to support and protect the rights of individuals and improve their educational results. Keep in mind, in 1970 U.S. schools educated only 1 in 5 children with disabilities
In 1974 The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) was passed allowing parents access to all personal information used by the school regarding their child.
