Schools today are faced with a daunting task. Education is our nation seems to be lagging behind, and the needs of student learning are falling short of intended goals and expectations. Reforming schools to meet today's needs begins with a carefully designed plan. This plan must be comprehensive. The standards-based reform is a place to begin, and the standards for areas of study must be understood so that a beginning can take place. A professional development plan must contain many aspects of a standards-based reform, and it not enough to think that knowledge of the content of the standards is the core means of development.
Professional development for a school cannot place its entire focus on a small group of the faculty. Nor can it limit the plans for development to presenting the standards, and listing the expected goals. Training must begin with the whole of the school community. Administration must take the lead in this effort. A series of plans must be developed. The process should include 1) an evaluation of the knowledge of the standards, 2) a plan of training, and 3) an evaluation of the training. The whole plan of this effort must be researched, and definite goals should be attained. The first step should be knowledge of the educational standards.
The faculty must have knowledge of the standards in their respective courses. This can be accomplished through departmental meetings, and open discussions among the faculty. A survey will be developed by each department to be presented to individual teachers. This survey will address the ...
