Solution Summary
One process of language acquisition that uses concepts to develop a lexicon. A concept is a category of common objects, events, and characteristics that are grouped together to organize information and are formed through direct experiences with objects and events. Conceptual development is influenced by lexical development because words are acquired for newly developed concepts. Words are symbols that refer to actions and tings that are stored in a mental lexicon that categorizes and organizes them. The student should use the concepts he is learning to broaden his lexicon. Lexical development influences conceptual development because words stimulate the development of new concepts. As the student learns new words, he is learning new concepts and must take time to process and organize the new information. For example, he must develop a whole new lexicon of understanding for his new language. He can immerse himself in language and words to better organize and process material into a new lexicon. The student can use strategies like a personalized vocabulary booklet and visual and oral information help to assist his new language skills.
