Socratic questioning and other questioning methods are great ways to discover how much students know. Rather than asking questions with just one right answer such as "What is the capital of the United States?", teachers could ask students why the capital is located in Washington DC and not in the center of the country. Rather than asking if car pollution is bad for the environment teachers should ask how auto emissions specifically make the environment worse. Word problems in math are a good example of probing for learner understanding. Given a math problem most students can complete it. However if simply asked a question with math facts embedded, more students have a harder time figuring out the answer. This illustrates a gap in student understanding.
