I am a manager of a corporate training department for a large multi-national corporation. My department has been conducting an analysis of learning outcomes based on the application of web based learning tools in concert with traditional face-to-face instruction. During the past year, my department conducted four sessions of an Interpersonal Skills course as part of this research project. The course was designed as an overview of interpersonal communication. The course goal was to improve the interpersonal communication in the workplace.

Two sessions of the course (the control group) were taught using traditional instructional tools and were not supported by a web based instructional platform. Course participants were not informed that they were participating in a planned study. Two other sessions (the experimental group) were taught using a web based instructional platform. Students in the experimental sessions were able to access an online learning platform, which provided a number of instructional tools and resources including a course syllabus, course schedule, course related articles, and topic-focused discussion boards. Course participants were not informed that they were participating in a planned study.

The learning outcomes for the experimental group were significantly higher than the control group. Of the 44 people who attended the experimental group sessions, 10 voluntarily reported, within three weeks, the application of principles and methods acquired from the seminar. Only 3 of the 50 participants from the control group made similar reports to the training manager. On the average, post-survey scores increased by 30% over pre-survey scores for the experimental group. Mean score on pre-survey for both sessions of the experimental group was 65%, with an average post-survey score of 95%. Follow-up questionnaires and interviews with line supervisors and mid-managers indicated, three months after completion of the sessions, that employees in both the experimental and control groups seemed to retain the information and procedures learned in the sessions. However, supervisors of those in the experimental group reported that employees seem to be deliberately applying the procedures for good interpersonal communication more often, and were coaching others in the department on use of the acquired skills. Further, the personnel who attended the experimental group apparently continue to access the website, for review of steps in the procedures.

The trainers who taught the experimental group have expressed a strong desire to teach additional courses using a web based instructional platform to supplement the traditional instructional process. Staff in the experimental group has expressed a desire to take more courses with this level of web based instructional support.

Research Question for the project is "Does the uses of web-based technologies provide a better outcome for training within companies than the traditional face to face instruction?"
