Worms: In general, worms are duplicating programs that move through different computer systems without a host file; conversely, viruses do require a host (like someone with a cold or flu) to spread them; they may hide and go unnoticed. Worms are usually found inside of other files or media and will distribute itself to different computers via an infected source. Some may even be programmed to do other things.

Viruses: These are programs written to change a user's computer operation without their request or realization. It executes itself via its host and places its code in the path of another program (i.e. if you think you are opening up File X, you are instead, opening up a virus). It also copies itself; may damage programs, erase files, or delete an entire operating system. Instead of executing damage, some viruses just present in the form of a video or message, like bugs that will not go away.
