On january 1st of 2003 there were 50 kg of cucumbers in a vegetable store and they were 99% water by mass. On february 1st of 2003 they were 98% water, by mass due to loss of water through vaporization. What was the mass of cucumbers on February 1st of 2003?

On January 1,2003
Total mass= 50 Kg
out of which water @ 99%= 49.5 Kg = 99% * 50
and remaining solid= 0.5 Kg = 50-49.5
The solid mass would not change, only water would vaporize
On February 1,2003
Solid= 0.5 (same as above)
This is (100%-98%=) 2% of the total mass
Therefore total mass= 25 Kg = 0.5/2%
Mass of water= 24.5 Kg = 25-0.5
Check:
% by mass of water= 98% = 24.5/25
(which is what the problem states)
Therefore mass (total mass)of cucumbers on Feb 1 ,2003= 25 Kg
