Introduction
McDonald's main line of business is fast food production and sales. The first
McDonald's began in 1940, in California, when two brothers opened a type of establishment that
used car hops to deliver food (Franchise Direct, 2010). It quickly expanded throughout the
United States and into Canada in 1967. In 1965, the corporation went public and began selling
shares. The corporation has franchise locations all over the globe, with largest in Bejing, China,
having enough room to seat 700 people. Some locations offer wifi and Nintendo, while others,
such as in Singapore, deliver food to customers. When McDonald's started out in 1040, it had
25 menu items. Today, many locations have three times the selection, with much more than
burgers, fries, milk shakes and Cokes. Salads, fish sandwiches, shakes, coffee drinks and many
more choices are available, depending on the location.
Though McDonald's focuses on both service and product operations, it prides itself on
providing the best customer service possible and has been fairly adept and keeping pace with
changing consumer demands. While many franchises are unable to maintain such flexibility, it
is the individual McDonald's franchise owners who have often created new products or
enhanced standard items (Franchise Direct, 2010). The McFlurry, Filet of Fish and Big Mac
have all been created by franchise owners, who have taken the initiative to design a product that
generates greater interest and satisfies customer tastes.
