First let's define the differences between verbal and nonverbal communication. With verbal, we are speaking. From this we pick up not only the content of the words themselves, but the intonation as well. Intonation can tell us a lot. Now let's look at nonverbal communication. This can be communication through things like gesture, body language, posture, facial expression and eye contact. Many communications classes will illustrate this by playing a portion of a tv show with the sound muted, then asking students what they think happened. This very simple and useful exercise shows us that we learn a lot of information from nonverbal communications.
