Conducting secondary research means collection of existing information. This information has already been collected in the past. From another stand point secondary research means culling relevant information form recorded or published data. The tools are essentially, gathering and selecting relevant material for the research. Traditionally, the sources of secondary information were research books, research reports, journal articles, scientific journal, and critiques of literary works and narratives of historical events. Publications of the governments, journals of universities and consumer reports have been powerful sources of secondary information. Both qualitative and quantitative information is available from secondary sources. For example the US Bureau of Economic Analysis gives valuable quantitative data is an important source of quantitative secondary data.

One of the largest sources of secondary information is making online search. However, online secondary information should be handled with care. If information is gathered from a website, it must be referenced in the report, further, it is necessary to avoid websites that have questionable sources of information. It is important to check the country of origin of the website as information from websites from different countries differs. Using a website for secondary information, it is necessary to use reputed websites or websites run by organizations that have a wide recognition and a positive reputation. In several cases, it is important to check the authenticity of website by phoning the professional body related to the source of information and checking with them. For instance, a person when collecting marketing information may consult the American Marketing Association. Secondary research sources exist in several sources.
