The example details how an effective marketing strategy was targeted towards individuals aged 70-79. Data purported to show that this age group was less likely to fall and injure themselves if given a physical regimen that increased balance, strength and stamina, thereby reducing healthcare costs associated with injuries. The fitness program was later coined S.A.I.L (Stay Active and Independent for Life) and has been very popular as well as successful in reducing fall rates among this age classification.
The Opening Example readings presents offers a concrete example of market segmentation, market targeting, and market positioning. This example is taken from the public sector (the Washington State Injury Prevention Program).
