1. You should say that both task oriented behaviors and relations oriented behavior are essential for effective leadership. The task oriented behaviors of the leader are to put in place the performance evaluation system, the criteria used for performance evaluation, and objective assessment of performance. The task oriented behaviors also include setting tasks, series of tasks, defining roles, and clarifying objectives. The task oriented behaviors also include close monitoring of the activity within the team and ensuring that deadlines are achieved and jobs are completed.

You may say that the relationship oriented behaviors include informal interaction to the point of being friendly with every employee. In addition, relationship oriented behaviors include mediating during conflicts, creating a non-competitive work environment, and offering bonuses. The behaviors include positive relationships, good communication, and meeting the individual needs of everyone. The leader inquires about their well-being, provides support when required, and is perceived as a caring person. The leader takes actions that build a positive work relationship and individuals feel driven(1). These actions have a strong effect on the motivation of the employees.
An example from my workplace is that of the production manager. He has eleven work teams and several other employees working for him. He is very precise, and accurate in setting targets for every team and every employee. Before the year commences, the list of criteria with weights on the basis of which the teams and individuals will be evaluated reaches the teams/employees. He also closely monitors the progress of every team and individual. If any team performs below their targets for two weeks, he visits them at least once a day. He pinpoints responsibilities, asks the team members for the tasks that they have completed and identifies the sources of delay.

At the same time he makes it a point to eat in employee's cafeteria every day. He never sits alone. There is always and employee or two pouring out their problems and story. He is a patient listener and has a word of encouragement for them. Any conflict and he is on the spot trying to sort out the situation. He uses task oriented & relations oriented behaviors and is an effective leader.
