Managing both paid and volunteer staff can be a challenge, particularly when they must
work together. An effective manager will consider the roles, tasks, and needs of the
organization, while also considering the abilities, skills, schedules, and needs of various staff
members. A manager must give volunteers enough challenge and responsibility to keep them
engaged and wanting to return each week. Paid staff must also have opportunity for growth,
whether in learning new skills, taking on additional responsibility, or moving into new roles.
There are many ways a manager can keep both groups of workers happy and feeling like their
work makes vital contributions to the organization, without singling out one group or the other,
for praise, feedback, and sharing of ideas.
