I think the most important distinction between leaders and managers is that in the purest sense, followers choose their leaders and subordinates have their managers thrust upon them.

Not all managers are great or even good leaders - the corporate adage about promoting someone to management to keep them from doing any damage comes to mind. Not all leaders are good managers - they may be able to communication their vision to the masses but cannot seem to relate well one-on-one.
