Although becoming a leader may take extensive time and preparation and potentially years of experience in relationship and network building, there are individuals that have natural leadership traits and may not need as much preparation. However, I would agree with the fact that rather than having to change before taken on a leadership position, it would be more important to be and act as a change agent within the organization to inspire change from the top down.
The role of a change agent is to be able to manage change at all levels of an organization. This individual may not yet be in a leadership position, however, he or she will have the skill and power to stimulate, facilitate, and coordinate the change effort. The success of any change effort depends heavily on the quality of the relationship between the change agent and the key decision makers within the organization.
