When comparing the Hersey-Blanchard Model of leadership with Fiedler's model, the Hersey-Blanchard Model of leadership focuses on the extent of direction and support a leader gives to his or her followers. For example, in cultures where there is need for clear directions, the Hersey-Blanchard Model of leadership would prescribe greater direction for the followers. However, the Fiedler's model focuses more on the position that the leader occupies when the he allocates task or develops relationships with his employees when he attempts to motivate them. There is a similarity between direction and task as well as support and relationship but the stress in case of Fiedler's model is on position. If a leader is motivating his followers in an environment where position is important then he can adapt the extent of task setting along with relationship development to the situation he encounters.

When comparing the Hersey-Blanchard Model of leadership with that of transformational leadership, the Hersey-Blanchard Model of leadership emphasizes task or relationship based approach depending on the followers. On the other hand transformational leadership model focuses on the leader's vision and the leader's appeal to what is right. The task that Hersey-Blanchard Model of leadership model focuses on is the actual work the followers are motivated to do on the other hand the purpose that is described in the transformational leadership is a lofty goal; it is far higher than the short term goal and concentrates on higher order intrinsic needs.

When comparing the Hersey-Blanchard Model of leadership with the Path-Goal Model the role of the leader according to Path-Goal Model is to coach and guide the workers towards the goal of the team (House, R.J. and Mitchell, T.R. 1974). The leader attempts to meet the needs of the subordinates. On the other hand in case of Hersey-Blanchard Model of leadership the leader's role is to use relationship or task emphasis based on the followers. In both the cases the leader's role is to realize the objectives of the group, however, the emphasis in Path-Goal Model are on coaching whereas the emphasis in case of Hersey-Blanchard Model of leadership is that of task-relationship (Wren : J. Thomas1995).
