One of the primary theories of leadership and motivation is the great man theory of leadership and motivation, which essentially is a theoretical perspective that describes leaders as being individuals that are born with certain qualities and characteristics that make them able to lead effectively under various conditions. This theoretical perspective also endorses the belief that leaders are born and it is highly improbable that an individual can be made into a leader per se. This theory holds that these individuals will be able to take leadership roles and situations require them, due to the innate leadership qualities that they have been born with.

Another important theory of leadership is the relationship theory of leadership and motivation, which is a theoretical perspective that certain types of leaders lead through the development of efficient and effective relationships between themselves and their subordinates, as well as the development of strong interrelationships between the subordinates within the organization. These individuals also help to bring out the best in the individuals that they lead through these cooperative relationships, which helps to ensure that organizational objectives are carried out in the most efficient and effective manner possible.

The trait theory of leadership is a leadership theory that describes the aspect of leaders having certain traits that make them more efficient at leadership and other individuals. These traits can include such things as a high level of charisma in dealing with others as well as a high level of self-discipline and courage etc. Although certain individuals have these traits, these individuals don't always utilize them to become leaders, which is one of the mysterious aspects of this theory.

Management theories are the theories of leadership and motivation in which individuals lead from a supervisory perspective, and that these individuals utilize their leadership abilities in controlling the processes and procedures that take place within an organization through directing their subordinates. Leaders that utilize this theory also engage in providing systems of reward for their subordinates being able to complete their duties effectively, and reprimands or punishments for those individuals that do not complete their duties in an effective and efficient manner etc.

Contingency theories of leadership and motivation are theories that endorse the belief that situational and/or environmental factors play a large part in determining the kind of leadership that is necessary in order to achieve success in a given situation. These theories help to illuminate the fact that certain types of leaders will be more successful in certain types of situations than others, as well as the fact that certain types of leadership style will be more pertinent to certain situations as well. In essence, effective leadership and motivation is contingent upon utilizing the methodology that is best suited for given environmental and situational factors or variables.

Participative theories of leadership and motivation are theories that endorse the belief that the completion of organizational objectives is more efficient and effective when a leader in allows the participation of subordinates into the overall leadership and management process.
