At Microsoft, the critical action was that Nadella indefinitely delayed its employees' return to the office. Nadella identified the potential threats and showed the scenario of what could happen. Nadella pointed out that there could be large-scale resignations of employees from Microsoft. The second threat was that hybrid work did not have performance standards (1). The key hope for Nadella was that hybrid work opportunities should be availed of, he should start getting feedback from employees, and he should get support from customers to strengthen his change effort.
2. The second action needed from a leader in forming a strong team or a powerful coalition. Currently, Nadella is using Microsoft's managers to hire more employees, acclimatize them, and onboard them. What Nadella needs to do is create a team that is dedicated to implementing the change from office-based work to hybrid work. The delegation of work to managers is not exactly a coalition of leaders specifically for implementing a change (2).
