Before differentiating various kinds of 'Performance Appraisal Programs' it is better to have a good understanding of the concept of performance appraisal. In this series, the first part of the discussion is including the knowledge of the term performance appraisal.//
Performance appraisal refers to the process of assessing the performance and progress of employees on a given job and their potential for future development. It is the systematic evaluation of employee's strengths and weaknesses in terms of job consisting of a series of steps. It provides necessary information to the management for taking personnel decisions, such as pay increases, promotions, demotions, transfers and terminations. It facilitates human resource planning, career planning and succession planning. It promotes a positive work environment, which contributes to productivity. Therefore, an organization can effectively utilize the performance appraisal system, if the system will be well defined and undertakes necessary steps for its improvement by following a set pattern of steps (Latham & Kenneth, 1994).
