Emotional intelligence is best defined as the ability of an individual to effectively control one's emotions, as well as to control the emotions of others, which also includes the important ability to be able to identify one's own emotional state, as well as to make accurate analytical assessments of one's emotional state. The key characteristics of emotional intelligence are a heightened sense of self-awareness, emotional mastery (especially negative emotions), an optimistic attitude, being a good team player, and being able to accurately read the emotional states of others.
