Code of Ethics or Code of Conduct, are sometimes used interchangeably. Each code illustrates how an employee within an organization should carry him or herself within the organization or outside the organization. Some organizations desire employees to maintain a professional demeanor during one's personal time as well. When I was attending school for my Doctorate, the Code of Ethics was to maintain a professional demeanor at all times for the reason that how I conduct myself is a direct reflection of the University I attend as well as the organization I represent. What an individual does while he or she is off the clock is just as important as what he or she does on the clock. Most professions generally encourage employees to adhere to a strict code of conduct.

For example, some organizations prohibit the use of social networking sites such as Facebook. If an employee has a profile on the website he or she may be terminated or will be required to remove such profile. I've met military personnel who aren't allowed to be on Facebook because it may put their lives in jeopardy and give the enemy unnecessary access to them or their whereabouts. Job seekers who have a Facebook profile, often post questionable content that may prevent them from obtaining employment or may get them terminated. Code of Conduct is not only pertinent to an organizational environment it also applies to how we conduct ourselves on a regular basis. Whichever term (Code of Conduct or Code of Ethics) an organization applies either terms outline an organizations primary mode of functioning, which is to maintain a professional demeanor within a corporate environment.

Code of Ethics is a fundamental outline that informs employees of their obligations with the company. It lays the core foundation of what professionals must adhere to while working in the company.
