The four categories of employee development are formal education, assessment, job experiences, and interpersonal relationships (Uploadtak, 2013). Formal education can include on-site and off-site education such as courses offered by consultants or trainings within the company. It can also include university education such as an MBA degree. Assessment "involves collecting information and providing feedback to employees about their behavior, communication style, or skills" (Uploadtak, 2013, slide 9). Assessments are often used to measure such things as an employee's strengths and weaknesses and those employees with the potential to move into higher positions. Performance appraisals are an example of an assessment that is generally used among organizations to determine an employee's efficacy and potential for promotion.
