1. What is the relationship between employee training and employee development? Are both necessary within an organization? Which is more important to an organization's development and why?

The relationship between employee training and employee development is significant. Many employees need ongoing training in order to stay current within their role or develop beyond their everyday responsibilities. This may be due to changes within the organization that might include advancements in technology or the implementation of new processes and procedures. Due to ongoing changes, it is necessary for employees to continue to develop and grow within the organization. "Employee development is the training of employees to extend their capabilities and prepare them to assume other jobs and roles within a firm" (Phillips & Gully, 2009). I think both are important and necessary within an organization. Even the most experienced employees need additional training because an organization's culture and standard practices determine how employees go about their daily roles. However, I think employee development is more important to an organization's development because if you have qualified people within the organization who are willing to learn new skills, and are able to cross train in different areas of the organization, it will provide more flexibility in managing the workforce. Even more so, employees learn new skills which make them more valuable across the board.

How do human resource management (HRM) policies differ for multinational companies compared with single-nation companies?
