1. List and briefly explain the five-component model of an information system. How can you use them?
The five component model of an information system is made up of hardware, software, data, procedures and people. According to Kroenke (2013), the five component framework is laid out horizontally, with data in the middle serving as a bridge between the computer side (the hardware and programs) and the human side (the procedures and people). Kroenke further delineates the components by showing that the hardware uses programs to deliver/produce data, while people use procedures as a way of instructing/computing data. Procedures are the "policies that govern the operation of a computer system" (Askenäs & Westelius, 2000). While each of these items serve as a separate component, they also work together to join together as a team to deliver results. Each of the components must be able to effectively contribute and work together. The five-component framework allows an information system employee the ability to evaluate each component to determine what is needed, in terms of hardware and licenses, data bases that must be created, and procedures needed to help people use and administer the system. In addition, it helps determine the system's impact on people, the training that will be needed to deal with the system, if adjustments will need to be made in staffing or in operations.
