According to Pfeffer (2005), the self-enhancement motive is the desire to see one's self in a positive light. Also, to better understand the impact of power and influence, you must understand there are psychological processes related to power. Processes related to power include,"... escalation of commitment, similarity attraction and in-group favoritism, the disinhibiting effects of power, and the persistence of hierarchical structures." (Pfeffer, 2005, p. 1) A person can build influence if he or she understands the psychological processes.
