I am a student in an introductory accounting course. During my mid-term exams I was given a take home assignment in which I had to write some journal entries, post them in relevant accounts and make a trial balance. At the end of the assignment, I found that my trial balance did not balance, that is the two sides of the trial balance did not add up the same figure. This means I had made a mistake. The instructor had told us not to consult with other students. I had a choice, if I asked a friend and identified the error, I would get at least one grade higher. However, ethical consideration played an important part. I submitted an unbalanced trail balance as I was not able to detect the error.
