a. Design a controlled experiment to test the hypothesis that an exercise session causes short-term increases in heart rate and breathing rate in humans ?

A controlled experiment means that you have a control group. For your experiment, the independent variable is the exercise session and the dependent variable is the heart and breathing rate.

You need a control group because there are other things that can cause short-term increase in heart and breathing rate such as chemicals in the air, music, visual stimulus (watching an action movie, etc), etc.

A sample experiment to test the above hypothesis could be as follows:
