According to the CDC, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) is a staph bacteria that is resistant to beta-lactams. Beta-lactams basically are rings that accompany the aminopenicillanic acid. Many bacteria produce beta-lactamase enzymes, which destroy the beta-lactam ring of penicillin. MRSA bacteria is resistant to methicillin, nafcillin, cloxacillin, oxacilin, penicillin, and amoxicillin. Clavulanic acid inhibits beta-lactamase enzymes.
