Solution Summary

This posting explains what correlational research is, and provides a real life example of it's application. It examines the negative relationship between an increase in training and a decrease in the number of errors and employee makes. It also looks at the connection between correlation and causation.

Hello,

The goal of correlational research is to "seeking out associations among variables." according to Wallen and Fraenkel. The correlation coefficient is often measured using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (called Pearson's correlation for short), or Pearson's r, called the correlation coefficient.

Essentially, when you are conducting correlational research, you want to examine if a relationship exists between variables. There are three outcomes in a correlational research:

1) There is a positive relationship between variables - when one variable increases, the other variable increases. This would give you a correlation coefficient that is positive.
2) There is NO relationship between variables. The correlation coefficient would be 0.
3) There is an inverse relationship between variables - when one variable increases, the other variable decreases. The correlation coefficient would be negative.

The correlation coefficient is a measurement of the degree of how related the variables are. It ranges from -1 to +1. A score of +1 means that there is a perfect positive linear correlation, and a score of -1 means there is a perfect ...
