Assess the impact of electronic media advertising on consumerism and cultural values.

Briefly describe the roles that music, radio, television, and the motion pictures have played in the development of American popular culture.
Identify at least three trends propagated by the electronic media. Evaluate the impact of these trends on your views or attitudes concerning the following topics:

Consumerism
Work
Social responsibility
Happiness
The human body
Justice, law, and order

The technologies of radio, television and movies have affected society in numerous ways. Some of these are good such as access to news coverage, understanding of other cultures, educational instruction supplements and better awareness of political events. However, the impact made by these forms of entertainment has not been all good. I have identified three negative trends related to these forms of entertainment.

They are:

? Instant gratification
? Lack of self-control (emotional immaturity)
? A self-absorbed perspective of reality

I will illustrate these three trends in several specific areas.

Consumerism

Burger King had a slogan a while back - "Your way right away". This is the heart beat of consumerism. We are told not to wait, not bargain shop, actually we're invited to check our brain at the door and spend. Why are Americans groaning under record levels of credit card and other type consumer debt? All three of the trends mentioned above play into run-away consumerism in America. The desire to buy what I want when I want it is not seen as foolish and self-destructive. It is viewed as an American right. "Charge it" is seen as the answer to any shortfall of ready cash. This leads into a discussion of self-control. We are not taught to build self-control. Many parents actually undermine self-control in their kids by offering to bribe them if they be quiet or behave in the supermarket. Finally, consumerism is fueled by a completely skewed view of what is importance. A good example of this is the house that quarterback Tom Brady and his supermodel wife Gisele Bundchen are building. Now remember she is a U.N. goodwill ambassador for environmentalism. Yet her house completely violates all of the spoken messages she has given. This shows how the three trends influence consumerism.

Work
Think to yourself, what is the stereotypical view of work presented by music, movies and television. When was the last time you saw a show that promoted hard work, dedication to a project, respect for those over you and a welcoming family at the end of the day. Nope, what we get is something more akin to the line from the Johnny Paycheck song, "Take this job and shove it." Think about instant gratification. Most of us feel ...
