Sacred places: Church of the Holy Sepulcher

Sacred places exist throughout the world and are not unique to any one particular culture. The sacred places of Christianity are perhaps best known to the western world. These include Jerusalem, Bethlehem and the Lake of Galilee region. For Islam, Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem are considered sacred. Stonehenge, the pyramids of Egypt, Chichen Itza in Mexico and Machu Pichu in Peru are also examples of places considered to be sacred.

There are two common views that explain the sacredness of a particular location. The first is a belief that spiritual power can be felt, experienced or acquired at these locations. The belief of some is that these locations mark a geographic spot where the physical and the spiritual worlds intersect. This explains why some people seek to be at the peak of various pyramids as the sun comes up at the summer solstice, or some other important day of the year. It explains the pilgrimages that people make to Stonehenge and the Ka'ba in Mecca.
